Come Alive with Exercise

Come Alive with Exercise

We live in a society where people are always looking for the next sports drink, energy bar, or coffee fix to give them the extra edge to get through the day; but it may be that lacing up the tennis shoes and getting out and doing some physical activity every day provides the spark of energy they’re looking for.

Yet, when we feel low or tired, stressed with family and work commitments, the thought of exercise seems counter-intuitive – why on earth would we want to exercise, when it feels like we’re ‘on empty’?

Good News

Here’s the good news. Research evidence shows that if we engage in some form of exercise (even light to moderate exercise), energy levels increase, not diminish.

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise gets your heart pumping, which is one of the key ways it helps give you energy. As your heart adapts to the demands of exercise it grows stronger, meaning that when you are resting, your heart doesn’t have to beat as often to circulate blood. Thus, your resting heart rate lowers, reducing the demands on your body and leaving you with more energy.

This becomes a positive feedback loop where increased energy boosts your workout so you build more endurance and have more energy to spare.

Ensure Your Success Over Time

The dilemma (and our high exercise disengagement rate) lies in our tendency to rush headlong into exercise and over extend ourselves because we have yet to build our capacity to exercise without fatigue.

For the long haul, take your cue from successful jockeys – the best of them pace the horse, building up slowly from the middle or the back of the crowd. It’s a finely judged strategy that works for us too!
