Dress to Perform for Better Fitness

Dress to Perform for Better Fitness

Most fitness trainers will tell you to wear a decent pair of track shoes and loose fitting clothing made from natural, absorbent fibres.

What you may not realise is that there is more to this sage advice than merely being appropriately dressed and comfortable as you exercise…

Why?

Because what you wear to your fitness session changes the psychology of the experience. In fact, how you dress can really sabotage your workout. Let me explain…

A wise man once wrote “Do everything well.” I agree. Doing everything well includes what we choose to wear, because it’s not only an outward sign of our approach to life but an important personal investment in our physical and emotional wellbeing.

And while it’s a given that what we wear affects how others perceive us – how we dress also reveals how we SEE OURSELVES, what we expect to accomplish and consequently, how effective our workouts are. So real is this phenomena that it is the difference between a lacklustre workout and a great one.

Does what we wear alone really benefit performance?

Absolutely. Joshua David, assistant professor of psychology at Barnard says “When we put on certain clothes, we actually influence our basic abilities. We have set our personal bar high, and the psychological and physical rewards follow.”

My advice?

Dress to perform for better fitness. Next time you visit the gymnasium or fitness studio, wear something you love and feel good in!

It’s more important than you think.
