Today I want to share one of the most profound but simple truths – and I’ve called this article “the K.I.S.S. principle” because it so aptly explains how the simplest thing (though there is nothing ‘stupid’ about this particular principle). Au contraire…

Water Temperature Matters

Most of us love to start our mornings with a fresh, hot cup of coffee or tea don’t we? It’s embedded in our culture (though more so in colder climates than ours). Even when we drink water we tend to drink it cold… it feels refreshing and ‘jolts’ us into wakefulness.

But we have it all wrong!

You see, according to Ayurvedic medicine, a drink of warm water (especially in the morning) heals our bodies in so many ways. Are you thinking that warm water first thing constitutes an assault on your taste buds? Are you thinking that your morning caffeine fix is non-negotiable? Humour me, I promise you’ll thank me for it:-)

Benefits of warm water

Here’s why and how:

It cleanses the digestive tract

Nutritionists say that a glass of warm water tightens the intestines and optimises elimination. For the rest of us, this is a polite way of saying it makes us go to the toilet! So, warm water is flushing out the toxins we’ve accumulated from the day before by breaking down the food much faster. A glass of cold water on the other hand actually hardens the oil in consumed foods and creates a fat deposit in the stomach. As my son would say, “Yuk!”

It’s the hero when you have constipation

We’ve all been there… the discomfort when our bowels refuse to work: the bloated feeling, the strain to eliminate. It’s all brought about by a lack of water in the body. Drink warm water – it is literally the hero here!

It alleviates menstrual and other pain

Headaches, menstrual pain, cramps, muscle spasms… warm or even hot water increases blood flow, relaxes, calms and soothes the system – and comes to your aid once again.

It sheds excess kilos

Yes, drinking a glass of warm water first thing in the morning assists weight loss. How? Because it increases body temperature, which in turn increases the metabolic rate… which now burns more calories and helps the intestinal tract and kidneys to function at a much higher level. This is the K.I.S.S. principle in action (and one the diet-food industry won’t ever mention).

DID YOU KNOW? Drinking a glass of warm water infused with lemon will help break down the body’s fatty tissues and control food cravings due to lemon’s pectin fibre.

It halts premature ageing

Now that is a pretty strong claim! But here’s the truth: the presence of toxins in the body can and do lead to premature ageing. Thus if warm water cleanses the body from toxins, repairs cells and increases elasticity, here again we see the K.I.S.S. principle in action.

To reap the health benefits of warm water, drink it every morning (plain or with a lemon for extra benefit). Try it. It will test you, there’s no doubt… we all crave our early morning caffeine fix but my advice is this: first thing, before you embark on your daily work schedule, make sure to deliver what your body craves. It will reward you manyfold.

Caffeine is a treat. I love it too. But I enjoy it wisely…
