Microdermabrasion Explained

Microdermabrasion as we know it today is a technology that was developed in Italy in 1985 by Doctors Mattioli and Brutto (Mattioli Engineering went on to produce the non-invasive and safe microdermabrasion approaches and techniques we use today). That is its history, but for Prana clients there are remaining questions… I hope we’ve answered at least some of your most frequent…

What is microdermabrasion exactly?

Microdermabrasion is a very effective and non-invasive way of exfoliating and rejuvenating the skin. Today, we use a fine stream of aluminium oxide micro-crystals to gently and precisely remove unwanted skin cells; a process which stimulates blood flow and collagen production – both of which contribute to improved regeneration and repair the skin.

It sounds very technical. But it is it safe?

Yes. Microdermabrasion is perfectly safe. Don’t be daunted… microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure which causes no trauma to the skin at all.

There are of course instances in which no procedure like this is appropriate… for example, people with auto-immune disorders or diabetes should always seek the advice of their clinician prior to treatments.
In short, the science is safe.

Thank you. So now, will I experience any pain with microdermabrasion?

No! Microdermabrasion is pain-free. Micro-crystals are gentle on the skin. Clients describe the sensation during treatment as tingling or warming – more comparable to a facial massage – certainly not uncomfortable or painful.

Immediately following the treatment, the skin may feel a little tight or dry but this is because the new layer of skin has exposed. You should experience no pain. At the same time, the skin is now sensitive and must be appropriately cared for and protected. Rest assured, we will advise and recommend the appropriate moisturising creams, sunscreen, and after-care treatment.

And are there any side-effects I should know about?

We’re glad you asked… it always pays to be informed. There are no common side effects after a microdermabrasion treatment. Following the treatment, the skin will be very sensitive and requires care and protection but having said that, if the treatment is performed professionally and the recommended aftercare program is followed, no problems should arise. The non-allergenic nature of the micro-crystals also means that even people sensitive to chemical compounds can usually undergo microdermabrasion without adverse reaction.

Did you know?

The history of microdermabrasion dates back to 1500BC in Egypt. Egyptians would use fine sandpaper to smooth (and defoliate) the skin. We have since refined this process but pay homage to our Egyptian forebears who first recognised the cleansing properties of what we now call ‘microdermabrasion’.
