exfoliation and microdermabrasion

Hmm… what’s the difference between exfoliation and microdermabrasion?

It’s a good question! Both give nature a little nudge, helping you to look and feel your best, but there are some important differences between them so let’s get started…

Exfoliation

When you were a child, you didn’t have to worry about dull skin. Your cells turned over quickly, resulting in a rosy, fresh-faced look. Adulthood – even young adulthood – wreaks havoc with that process.

Exfoliation – whether you use a special ‘glove’ in the shower, or a lightly abrasive cream, gets rid of the dead skin cells closest to the surface and leaves the skin cleansed of everyday pollution: excess oils and dirt (or even soap scum) that builds up over time and settles into your pores.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, is a non-invasive procedure that not only eliminates dead skin but also stimulates the growth of a smooth new layer. Microdermabrasion is particularly beneficial for those with extremely dry, thick, rough and gritty textured skin. This procedure will resurface your skin and refresh it down to its deepest layers.

It is also particularly beneficial if you suffer from hyperpigmentation (skin darkening) because it removes some of the outer layer of the hyper pigmented skin and promotes a fresh layer closer in colour to the surrounding skin. If you suffered with acne or eczema in the past and now have some residual surface scarring, microdermabrasion is for you.

So microdermabrasion is more than exfoliation?

Exactly! Being a mechanical form of exfoliation, the results are far superior, leaving your skin with a ‘clean and fresh’ sparkling tone due to the regeneration of the epidermal cell structure.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

No, not at all. Depending on your original skin condition, your skin may feel a little tight, red or swollen (just as if you had been exposed to the sun or wind) for a while; that’s all. Most of all, don’t worry, you are in safe hands – pre and post treatment.
