Systemise Your Workouts For Effective Results

I’ve been a gym member for years so I’m focused on regular training but my results are patchy.

Can you advise?

Certainly, my pleasure. The main reason results become patchy is usually lack of strategy.

Having systems and principles to follow (just as you do in the workplace) and setting yourself clear, achievable goals are the key to physical progress.

So, as an experienced personal trainer, I would ask you:

  • What are you training for: are you trying to get fit, lose weight, or build muscle?
  • How often do you train, and for how long?
  • Do you mix cardio and weight training in the same session?
  • How often do you change programmes and have a complete break from training?

The answers to those questions define what you should be doing, how and when.

So where do I go from here?

Systemise Your WorkoutsWell you have two choices. You can continue training by trial and error and learn the hard way as most people do through ‘learning’ online, taking the advice of friends or just experimenting. The problem with this approach is that it is long-winded, prone to self-inflicted injury and as you’ve seen, gives inconsistent results. Or, you can seek the advice of a personal trainer who will take the time to know you and where you’re at.

What should I look for in a personal trainer?

Number one: Look beyond qualifications or text-book knowledge – requisite and desirable as they are, they do not in and of themselves tell you much.

Number two: Look for real-world experience. Competent personal trainers will get behind ‘who the client is’ – their age, genetic makeup, physical condition, motivations etc. – before they produce the appropriate course of action.

In short: you are looking for training plus experience plus empathy. You can’t fake that. Look for a trainer who will change your body, your mindset, your lifestyle, your habits and your reality.

One final note: clients should not rely on personal trainers for the long-term. A good personal trainer is there to teach and thoroughly prepare the ground. When you have listened, absorbed and understood what it is you need to do, the results you get will be consistent, planned, and an intrinsic component of your training regime.
