Winning Awards

Thinking about winning awards…

When Leonardo DiCaprio accepted his first Oscar in 2016 (he’d waited a long time!), it got me thinking about what awards really tell us… what those ‘Legend Awards’, ‘Lifetime Achievement Awards’ and Brownlow Medals etc. actually reward – who selects them and why. Not quite in that league but still highly prized are Salon Awards: many richly deserved no doubt but some more a product of expensive marketing and ‘influence’.

I think we ought to introduce one more honour:

‘THE PEOPLE’S AWARD’

People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Theodore Roosevelt

President Roosevelt no doubt had other things on his mind when he penned that quote but for us it encapsulates a simple truth: Thank customers if they complain – most will simply walk away. Thank them for returning – because loyalty cannot be bought. Show respect, listen, learn, and always do the right thing. No salon can escape the reality that unless and until clients trust us we are ultimately failing them.

Awards? Prana can live without them. The rewards of doing the right thing cannot be measured – except perhaps in the luxury of being able to sleep well at night in full knowledge that respect goes both ways. We are loved; and we love in return.
